What Do You Think?

Occasionally I run across items that give me too many ideas.  I have had this old drawer for a few months now and cannot decide what to do with it.  One option is to list it in my shop as is, but I really don't want to do that.  It is 12 inches front to back and 9.5 inches wide.

One option is to paint the outside of the drawer and another is to paint the entire thing - inside and out.  I would then attach the brass handle.

So if that option is the choice, what color would I paint it?  White is typically the choice, but would another color go well with the drawer handle?

Another option is to add hanging hardware to the back and make it a hanging shelf/curio.  This option would preclude it from being used on a flat surface.

So... What do you think?  Please comment and help me narrow down my options.

  1. first off cool handle! You could stain it, give it a nice rich color. Make sure to stain the inside to since by the looks of it its made from two different woods. Then put a frame around it and you would have "framed" shelving. Cut a piece of wood and put it in the middle and now you have two shelves! I'll give ya a link when I find the picture.

  2. While my first opinion would be to keep it as a drawer, I'm not sure how well that would sell on Etsy considering the person would have to have something for it to fit in... Anyway, my opinion for keeping it a drawer:

Put on that handle and don't paint it white! I would paint it an Autumn or naturey color. Green would look lovely, especially with some gold accents. :) A deep red would also look especially brilliant.

As far as getting it to sell on Etsy, though, would be to go with the curio idea. Your artistic options would also be more open this way since you wouldn't have to worry about matching the handle color.

    Hope I helped!

  3. I prefer it like a drawer than a shelf, that lilac/blue is beautiful... and your handle is gorgious. I also have a collection of old wood drawers ! I'm keeping them in my workplace for storage

  4. I think you should make it a serving tray. You would need two handles, but I think it would be neat. I think a shabby paint job in burgundy and pink or burgundy and sage would be sweet, and line it with vintage floral wallpaper! It would be very country and I think it would do great on Etsy.

Hope that gets the creative juices going!

  5. If you're going to keep it, I would use it in a way that would work for you. Either holding supplies for those things you make, spools of ribbon or paperwork related to your work, etc. I would definitely paint it. If you do it as a flat holder, you could do an embellishment like the handle on one or two sides. Add some ball feet to the bottom. You could paint the inside or line it with scrapbook paper.

To hang it, I don't know that you'd get much use out of it unless you just use it as an art type piece. You could paper the inside with book pages or sheet music and do some kind of shadowbox thing with it.

  6. I like it as a shelf as well. I think it would very cool hanging on the wall.

  7. If it's not too deep I would also love this as a tray. Paint it a nice rich deep mahogany or dark cherry color (my favorites) then glue postcards at the bottom than polyeruthene the whole thing. May be some vintage postcards?
